The New York Central Railroad was founded by Erastus Corning, John Jacob Astor, and several other investors. The company was incorporated in 1826, and construction on the railroad began in 1829. The first train ran from Albany to Schenectady in 1831. By the 1850s, the New York Central had become one of the largest and most important railroads in the United States.
