How to Lay Railroad Ties

Railroad ties are used for many homes and businesses for landscaping. Railroad ties can create a barrier or perimeter, can be used as a fence or as a lawn border, or even be used as terrace structures. They can be purchased from any lawn and garden shop or home improvement store, and they're less expensive than purchasing slate or stone for the same purposes.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the perimeter of where the ties will be with your measuring tape.

    • 2

Visit a home improvement store and purchase the correct amount of ties based on size of the perimeter.

    • 3

Dig a shallow footing with a regular shovel. The footing should be about three inches deep and seven inches across.

    • 4

Starting at the beginning of the perimeter, place one railroad tie into the footing. Directly next to it, place another. Continue to place the ties into the footing until all of the railroad ties have been laid down. Because they are heavy, the ties do not have to be placed in cement or nailed into the ground.
