Hold a job safety briefing detailing risks involved in the task ahead. Pass out written safety instructions to all workers.
Initiate Blue Flag Protection. If a worker is on or inside equipment, he hangs his identification tag from an attached blue staff. The equipment may not be moved until the worker removes the tag himself. Do not remove another person's tag, as this may endanger him.
If the rail equipment has been derailed, employ a portable car hoist system or crane to lift the car back onto the tracks. This task should only be performed by a trained rail employee or contractor.
Attach the knuckles of the fallen car (or locomotive or equipment to be attached for movement) to the track mobile (a small, loader-sized piece of equipment fitted with rail guides that may be used on or off track), locomotive or train consist (locomotive with cars attached). Wear gloves for this task.
Man the locomotive with a GCOR-trained train crew, including a locomotive engineer, conductor and brakeman/switchman.
Operate the locomotive to the equipment's destination. If a car has been derailed, it should be directed to the mechanical department to check for defects. A derailed locomotive will be dropped off at the diesel locomotive shop. Other equipment, such as Maintenance of Way (rail construction) equipment, if it has been derailed, will be directed to the mechanical department before returning to the MOW garage. Equipment not derailed and transported to another terminal for use will likely still be sent for inspection before use.
