Research the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad schedules before the day of your trip, since they vary depending on the time of year. You may purchase your train tickets ahead of time or at the depot before you depart.
Wear comfortable clothes and shoes on the day of your trip. Bring a jacket even in the summertime, since mountain weather can change quickly.
Pack snacks and water in your backpack. You can buy food and drinks on the train, but it's a good idea to have some of your own, too.
Arrive at the depot in downtown Durango at least 30 minutes before your scheduled departure.
Wear sunglasses while riding the train, as cinders from the engine can become painfully lodged in your eyes. Sunscreen is also a good idea, particularly if you are sitting next to a window on one of the vintage cars or in one of the open-air gondola cars.
Keep your camera ready at all times, because spectacular scenery lies around every turn on the trip.
