How to Use the Las Vegas Monorail

Visiting all the casinos on the Las Vegas Strip can require miles of walking or expensive cab rides. An alternate choice is to use the monorail that runs behind the casinos from the Sahara to the MGM Grand. Learn how to use the Las Vegas Monorail to save money and the strain on your feet.

Instructions

Visit the Las Vegas Monorail online for tickets, or go to one of the following casino stations: Sahara, the Las Vegas Hilton, Las Vegas Convention Center, Harrah's/Imperial Palace, Flamingo/Caesars Palace, Bally's/Paris Las Vegas, and the MGM Grand. For two-casino stations, be aware that the first casino name is where the station is located. Monorail stations have staffed ticket booths during the day, as well as 24-hour ticket-vending machines at the station entrances and in other areas of the station casinos. Both cash and credit cards are accepted at the booths and vending machines.

Think about your plans in Vegas and choose the appropriate type of ticket. There are one-ride, two-ride, multi-ride and multi-day passes available. Unlimited-ride day or multi-day passes are often your best bet, allowing you to jump on and off the monorail at your convenience without having to keep purchasing tickets. Trains usually arrive on each platform every 7 minutes. Monorail ticket prices range from $5 to $20. Children under 5 ride free.

    • 3

Approach an empty ticket gate at the entrance to the monorail. Insert your ticket as indicated in the slot on the right side of the gate. The ticket will get sucked inside to be read by the machine and then will pop out the top of the gate, above the slot where you inserted it. (One ride tickets won't come back out.) Remove the card and quickly make your way through the now-open gate. Don't hang back because the gates might close, and you'll have to use the ticket again or buy another one. If you're uncertain of the procedure, simply wait for someone else to go through the gates and watch what he does.

    • 4

Consult the printed monorail map or use the posted route maps in the station to figure out your location and which direction you want to go. One side of the station is for northbound trains and the other side for southbound. Be sure you are standing on the right platform to reach your desired destination.

    • 5

Wait for other passengers to leave the monorail before trying to board. Once the way is clear, move quickly and choose a seat. Be considerate of other passengers and sit on an end rather than the middle, to make it easy for others to fill in the empty seats. Give up your seat to elderly or disabled monorail riders. If there are no available seats, stand near a hand rail and hang on. The monorail goes over 50 mph and the ride can get a bit bumpy.

    • 6

Remember your stop and be ready to disembark the moment the monorail stops. The trains move fast and the doors open and close quickly. Any hesitation on your part and you may have to ride along to the next stop and come back on another train.

Follow the signs posted to exit the station and enter the casino. Look for directional signs in the casino if you're heading to a connected property or need to get across the street. Ask casino staff for help if you're unsure which way to go. A wrong turn can lead to several blocks of extra walking.

Use any casino station to get back to where you started. Check the monorail map again to be sure you're on the right platform.
