Train Tours of the Midwest

Consisting of 12 states throughout the north central region of the country, the Midwestern United States offers more than 100 train excursions and railway museums. The trains travel across the mostly rustic region filled with valleys, lakes, rivers and mountains. In just the two Midwestern states of Minnesota and Nebraska alone, there are close to 8,000 miles of railroad tracks in use as of 2010.
  1. Lake Superior & Mississippi Railroad

    • The Lake Superior & Mississippi Railroad scenic excursion train operates on the weekends between mid-June and mid-October. The roundtrip ride departs from Duluth, Minnesota, across the way from the Lake Superior Zoo. The trip runs for 1 ½ hours and travels alongside the shores of Spirit Lake, Mud Lake and the St. Louis River. Passengers travel aboard antique trains with some of the restored cars dating back to 1912. Children under the age of 3 ride for free.

    Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad & Museum

    • The Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad & Museum is located in the central part of Iowa and offers four different types of scenic train excursions throughout the year. Fares for the dinner train and the dessert train included the cost of food, while guests must provide their own snacks for the picnic train. All three excursions last for 2 ½ hours. The 1920s excursion, a ride aboard a 1920s-era train, includes a concession stand and open-air seating. All of the rides travel through the Des Moines River Valley, a region filled with wildlife and natural beauty.

    Fremont & Elkhorn Valley Railroad

    • Operating on the weekends from early May to late October, the Fremont & Elkhorn Valley Railroad is Nebraska's longest tourist railroad. The 16-mile, three-hour round-trip excursion departs from the historic railroad town of Fremont and on Saturdays includes a 30-minute layover in the town of Nickerson. Passengers travel aboard a vintage 1920s train, outfitted with some climate control cars, through the Elkhorn River Valley. The museum offers chartered excursions for school children as well.
