Originally a freight and logistics firm, in 1991 Seminole Gulf Railway started the Dinner Train. It was a success and the company started offering daytime train trips. The train, which is used for day excursions, dinners and murder mysteries, holds up to 200 passengers. There are four rail cars that date from the 1930s to the 1950s, and all are restored to their original time period. Food is prepared on board the train and is served by an in-house staff.
There are special trips for the holidays, including Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Seminole Gulf Railway is located in Fort Meyers, in southwest Florida. Trips are generally three and a half hours long, although some holiday excursions are longer.
Key West is a popular destination for many Florida visitors. The tour lasts 90 minutes and takes sightseers through Old Town Key West and see Mallory Square, Key West Shipwreck & Treasure Museum, Key West Aquarium and Harry Truman's Little White House. The company also offers a Ghosts & Gravestones Night Tour that includes admission to a haunted Civil War fort. Leave the driving to the conductor and soak up the history and the folklore of Key West.
A must for train enthusiasts, this is the official rail museum of Florida, and celebrates the heyday of rail adventures. See Florida from an air conditioned rail car from the 1950s. Located in Parrish, the tours highlight local farms and history of the railway in Florida. The museum also offers special events, including a train robbery and a North Pole express. There is something sure to appeal to travelers of all ages at the museum.
