Individuals with limited mobility may find a tourism-oriented train trip ideal. Just make sure to check with an individual company prior to booking. Most companies are able to accommodate those in wheelchairs. The Green Mountain Railroad in Vermont, for example, has wheel chair lifts at all locations and can accommodate common-sized wheelchairs as long as occupants are able to board independently. The Grand Canyon Railway Steam Train Rides offers a limited number of seats that can accommodate those in wheelchairs. Individuals are encouraged to inquire prior to booking.
Major railways work to accommodate handicapped passengers as well. Amtrak, for example, can assist individuals with boarding by laying down bridge plates between a train and station platform. Once on board, an individual can remain in his wheelchair or select an accessible seat and stow his wheelchair nearby. Wheelchairs shouldn't exceed 30 inches in width, 48 inches in length and two inches of ground clearance. When occupied, a wheelchair should weigh no more than 600 pounds. Amtrak can also accommodate those bringing oxygen equipment with advanced notice and allows service animals.
Smaller companies may also offer train experiences in a local setting, often traveling from just one point to another and back. These include children-oriented character trains, dinner tours and day tours. Smaller companies may be less able to accommodate wheelchairs, depending on the age of the trains they use, which may lack lifts and potentially have narrower aisles. However, you should always inquire. The great majority of companies want to find a way to win your business and will work to find a solution.
