Book moderately priced tickets from Barcelona to Milan via the RENFE Web site (see Resources below). The Trenhotel 11273 (also known as the Talgo Night service) leaves the Barcelona train station on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. The trip to Milan is about 16 hours.
Print a confirmation page with your car and seat numbers and a "'localizer." Have this confirmation for the conductor when you board and your ticket(s) will be issued then.
