Book your entire Tunisia trip through a travel agent while in Italy. While in Italy, a travel agent can arrange train and ferry passage at no extra charge. The Trenitalia Web site (see Resources) lists them under Agencies and Ticket Offices.
Purchase tickets at the train station, realizing that you may need to stay overnight in southern Italy to catch the ferries.
Pack according to your rail plan. Tunisia is hot and dry, so bring warm-weather gear for the beach. However, Tunisia is also a Muslim country so make sure you have appropriate coverage while outside of beaches and tourist hotels.
Validate your train ticket at a kiosk prior to boarding.
Pay attention. You may have to change trains along the way; check your ticket.
