How to Book a Train Trip on Ontario Northland

Ontario Northland operates the bulk of the train service in Northern Ontario, Canada. It has two passenger train routes and two excursion train routes. The passenger trains operate year round, but the excursion trains, marketed primarily to tourists, are seasonal.

  1. Purchase Tickets for Ontario Northland Trains

      Call Ontario Northland at (800) 461-8558 to book travel or visit their Web site (see Resources below).

      Buy tickets at any Ontario Northland train station. You shouldn't have a problem buying tickets just before you leave. Trains don't often sell out.

      Check for fare discounts. Seniors 60 years and older get a 10 percent discount. Students with ID get a 15 percent discount and children 2 to 11 years old get a 50 percent discount. There are several other discounts, so be sure to see if you qualify.

    Choose Between Ontario Northland Trains

      Book a trip on the Northlander for service from Toronto in Southern Ontario to Cochrane in Northern Ontario. The Northlander runs one trip in each direction every day except Sunday.

      Book a trip on the Little Bear, also called the "regular train," for service between Cochrane and Moosonee, both in Northern Ontario. The Little Bear operates both freight and passenger service. The train runs north Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and it runs south Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

      Book a trip on the famous Polar Bear Express for service between Cochrane and Moosonee with no stops in between. This train operates six times a week between the end of July and the end of August.
