How to Book a Trip to Northern Ontario by Train

Northern Ontario constitutes almost 90 percent of the Canadian province's land mass, but is home to fewer than 10 percent of its residents. Known for its unique culture and unspoiled landscapes, Northern Ontario makes for a wonderful tourist destination. The best way to visit this region is by booking a train trip.

  1. Choose Trains for Northern Ontario Travel

      Call VIA Rail Canada at (888) VIA-RAIL or visit their Web site (see Resources below). Book a trip on one of the two passenger trains operated by Ontario Northland. The Northlander passenger train connects Northern Ontario with Southern Ontario and offers roundtrip service six times a week. The Little Bear connects Cochrane and Moosonee and alternates north and south routes every other day.

      Book a trip on one of the two excursion trains operated by Ontario Northland-great for day trips. The Polar Bear Express runs from Cochrane to Moosonee on the James Bay coast six times a week in the summer months. The Dream Catcher Express runs from North Bay to Temagami in the fall.

      Book a trip on the Lake Superior operated by VIA Rail, for service between Sudbury and White River. This train makes three round trips a week and stops at several stations along the way.
