Instructions

  1. Book Your Train Travel From Ireland to Scotland

    • 1

Know that the citizens of the Republic of Ireland, the European Union, the United Kingdom (which includes Northern Ireland) and the United States do not need a visa to enter the country. However, a valid passport for the duration of your stay in Scotland is required.

    • 2

Be aware of potential discounts. Student, senior and group discounts are often available. Know that the earlier you book, the lower your fares might be.

    • 3

Reserve passage with Direct Ferries onboard the P&O Irish Sea Ferries if leaving from Larne, Ireland, to either Troon or Cairnryan (see Resources). Crossing time is about 2 hours and 15 minutes or 1 hour and 45 minutes, respectively.

    • 4

Consider the local weather as you book your trip. Rainfall is common throughout the year, which can lead to choppy waters as you cross the Irish Sea.

    • 5

Sit back and enjoy listening to the local lingo. Scotland has 3 nationally acknowledged languages: English, Scottish Gaelic and Scots, an Anglic version of Gaelic more commonly spoken in the lowlands. Rest assured that signs and schedules will be noted in English.

    • 6

Book your ferry passage with the Stena Line via Direct Ferries if boarding from Belfast to Stranraer. There are up to 8 passages daily of approximately 1 hour and 45 crossing time.

    • 7

Check with the Irish Rail (Iarnród Éireann) to determine which train to book to take you to the ports of Belfast or Larne from which you will ferry to Scotland (see Resources).
