Choose a route. The only direct route from Hungary to Switzerland runs from Budapest to Zurich, once each day. To arrive in Bern or Geneva, you will have to first book a ticket to Vienna and then take another train from there.
Decide when you'd like to leave. If you are stopping in Vienna, there will be many trains daily: choose something convenient for a connecting flight or rail trip if it is already booked. If you plan to buy your next ticket once you arrive in Vienna, give yourself time and start early.
Exchange enough Hungarian currency. If you take the direct Zurich route, a first-class ticket will cost around 7,000 forints. If you are going to Vienna, the ticket will cost closer to 2,000 forints.
Bring your passport, but skip the visa: U.S. citizens are able to enter and stay in Switzerland for up to 90 days.
Decide on first-class or second-class travel. First-class is recommended for people with any difficulty sleeping. Budapest to Zurich is a 12-hour trip, and you will want to be comfortable.
Go to a train station at least a few days in advance to purchase the tickets. Go to the Budapest central ticket office for the best service. Be specific when ordering from the ticketing agent.
Visit Rail Europe's Web site if you plan on doing any more train travel around Europe. You might find a rail pass that works for you, but remember that rail passes can only be purchased prior to leaving your home country.
Ask about discounts: European railways offer heavy discounts to students, children and seniors. Find out if you or any of your travel group qualify.
