Ways to Travel to Georgia

Each year tourists flock to Georgia to see Savannah's historic homes, camp in the mountains of North Georgia and see athletic events in the states's capital city, Atlanta. The second-largest industry in the state of Georgia is tourism, according to Georgia Tourism. Visitors to the state have a variety of options when deciding whether they want to fly, cruise or drive to Georgia.
  1. Airports

    • One of the largest airports in the world, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (atlanta-airport.com), is within 30 minutes of downtown Atlanta. According to the City of Atlanta's website, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport accommodates approximately 80 million passengers annually. The airport featured two terminals and six concourses, as of the date of publication.

The Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (savannahairport.com) services the metropolitan areas of Savannah, Georgia, and Hilton Head, South Carolina. The airport's website states this airport services more than two million passengers per year, making it the second-busiest airport in Georgia. Destinations from Savannah/Hilton Head Airport include Dallas, New Jersey and Chicago.

    Amtrak

    • The longest rail line in Georgia is the Crescent, a line that runs from Penn Station in New York City to the Union Passenger Terminal in New Orleans. Georgia Amtrak stations on this line are in Toccoa, Gainesville and the Peachtree Station in Atlanta.

The busiest Amtrak (amtrak.com) station in Georgia, in terms of amount of lines, is Savannah, which has three lines: Silver Star, Palmetto and Silver Meteor. Savannah is the southern end of the Palmetto line; this line's northern end is New York City. The other two lines, Silver Star and Silver Meteor, runs from New York City to Miami. The Silver Meteor also passes by the train station in Jesup.

    Interstates

    • Four U.S. Interstate highways offer access to Georgia. Interstate 75 enters Georgia from the Chattanooga, Tennessee, area to the north, while this Interstate's southern entrance is near Valdosta. Savannah is the entrance city for Interstate 95, which travels along Georgia's Atlantic Coast and leaves the Peach State near Jacksonville, Florida. Interstate 20 is the only interstate highway passing through Georgia horizontally; this interstate's Georgia bookends are Augusta to the east and Alabama to the west. Interstate 85 carries passengers from South Carolina, through Georgia and leaves the state near Columbus. All four of these interstates pass through Atlanta.

    Cruise

    • As of the date of publication, Regent Seven Seas Cruises (rssc.com) offers cruise that disembarks at the port in Savannah. The Seven Seas Navigator embarks from Montreal, Canada, or Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The cruise from Fort Lauderdale runs for 11 days, while the Montreal cruise runs for 15 days. Seven Seas Navigator typically stays in Savannah for one day, allowing passengers to visit the historic sites in Savannah, including the Victorian District. These cruises occur in the spring and fall.
