Electric Vs. Gas Motorized Bicycles

When making the jump to a motorized bike, you'll be presented with the option of either a gas-powered or electric model. Deciding what type to get should be based on information on both types and personal preferences and requirements.
  1. Gas-powered

    • A gas-powered bike has some pros and cons. On the plus side you'll never have to worry about recharging it, and you can fill up your tank at any gas station if you carry 2 stroke oil with you on the bike (a 2-stroke engine requires a gas/oil mixture to run). Generally, gas-powered bikes have more hill-climbing power than electric bikes. Cons of gas-powered bikes are that you have to pay for gas and 2-stroke oil. Also the increased power of gas-powered bikes mean they can travel at higher speeds, making them more dangerous to operate than electric bikes.

    Electric-powered

    • On the plus side, you never have to purchase gas or oil and mess around with gas leaks or spills. Electric-powered bikes are also much quieter than gas bikes, so you'll save yourself a noise-induced headache when riding. The cons of electric-powered bikes are the annoyance of running out of juice away from your at-home charger, and getting stranded with a dead battery. Also, electric bikes sometimes lack the power to climb steep hills.

    Picking a Type

    • Which type of bike you choose depends on your needs and requirements. If you live in a hilly area, you'll need either a powerful electric model or a gas-powered bike. If you just have a flat commute to work or school, an electric is the best bet. If you want a smoother ride, get an electric model. Gas bikes are noisier and give a rougher ride. If you need higher speeds, get a gas model, but if you want a safer bike, electric is probably the best bet.
