How to Increase Electric Trailer Brake Force

You are using your travel or utility trailer and find that the trailer is pushing against your tow vehicle when you are braking. Electric trailer brakes have an electromagnet that uses power from the tow vehicle to activate the trailer brakes. You need a brake controller in your tow vehicle to provide enough braking force to stop the trailer safely. If you have a controller and the trailer is not helping you stop safely, you need to increase the braking force applied by the controller.

Adjust the trailer brakes before setting a brake controller. Use wheel chocks to block one trailer wheel. Jack up the opposite side and support it with jack stands. On the rear of each wheel hub is a brake adjustment hole normally covered with a rubber plug. Remove the plug, turn each tire and use the brake adjustment tool to rotate the adjustment wheel inside the wheel hub. A correctly adjusted brake will slightly rub the brake drum when you turn the tire. Adjust all brakes then lower the trailer and connect it to your tow vehicle.

Install a brake controller on your vehicle. Use wire strippers and wire connectors to connect wiring from the controller to the trailer connector plug at the rear of the vehicle. Also, connect wires to the brake switch, vehicle ground and power from the battery. Connect the controller to the existing harness connection if your vehicle has a towing package.

Adjust the controller with the adjustable force or "gain" control. Find a straight section of road and maintain a speed of about 25 mph. Warm the trailer brakes by stopping a few times, then manually activate the brake controller using the manual button or lever. Set the controller gain so the trailer slows without locking the brakes and without using the brakes on the vehicle.

Change the brake controller gain whenever you tow a heavier or lighter trailer load. Make these adjustments whenever you tow.
