ATV Riding Parks in Missouri

Although Missouri has some metropolitan areas such as St. Louis and Kansas City, a large portion of the state has rural forested areas. A popular activity in the state is all-terrain-vehicle (ATV) riding. As a result, there is a wide range of ATV parks to choose from. At least 10 that are located throughout the state. Some of ATV trails are privately owned while others are located in state parks.
  1. Mark Twain National Forest

    • The Mark Twain National Forest has approximately 80 miles of bike trails in its Chadwick Motorcycle and ATV area. The trails wind in an out of hollows in forested areas as well as along the tops of ridges, laid out so it's possible to travel in long loops without having to backtrack. The Chadwick area is spread out of over 12 square miles of land and also has camping facilities. Riding permits for ATVs, motorcycle and mountain bikes are required and can be purchased on both a daily and seasonal basis. The Mark Twain National Forest is located approximately four miles from the town of Chadwick in the southwest central part of the state.

    Smurfwood Trails

    • Situated in the northwest part of Missouri, Smurfwood Trails has ATV and off-road motorcycle trails that wind though forests, across fields, through creek crossings and over bridges. The trails also go through mud pits. It has 15 miles of trails that are spread out over 660 acres. ATVs wider than 55" are not allowed. Smurfwood Trails can also accommodate small groups that want to reserve trails for their own private use. The property also has two cabins that can be rented as well as camping sites for RVs and tents. The cabins do not have plumbing, but there are outhouses on the grounds.

    St. Joe State Park

    • St. Joe Park is located in the southeast part of Missouri. The park is the third largest in the state with 8,238-acres and has approximately 2,000 acres set aside with trails for ATVs, motorcycles, dune buggies and four-wheel drive vehicles. These trails go though 800 acres of sand-flats, which consist of crushed limestone, as well wooded hillsides. Some of the hills are steep. Located at the start of the trails are three shelters, vault toilets, water, a facility to change clothes, grills and picnic tables. The park also has trails for horses, bicycles and mountain bikes. Visitors to the park can take advantage of two campgrounds.
