Kankakee State Park Riding Stables

Kankakee State Park is located in northeastern Illinois, situated in the Kankakee River valley on about 4,000 acres of land. The stables offer horses and guides, or you can bring your own animal to the trails.

    Features

    • The Kankakee riding stables offer guided rides, pony rides and outdoor cookouts.

    Location

    • The stables are located on Deselm Road, less then one mile north of Route 102.

    Trails

    • Equestrian trails are located on the south side of the Kankakee River. There are also horseback trails located in a 12-mile loop in the wildlife management area.

    Time Frame

    • The wildlife management area maintains the equestrian trails from April 1 to Oct. 31. The trails open at 1 p.m. from April to mid-May, sunrise to sunset from mid-May through August, sunrise to 11 a.m. during September and sunrise to sunset during October.

    Warnings

    • Wear bright colors; hunters are allowed to be in the area. If you are riding your own horse, you must carry proof of your Coggins test, which tests for a virus called equine infectious anemia. Groups exceeding 25 people must obtain special permission with the office.
