How to Get to Chateau De Versailles

Versailles, larger than the entire country of Monaco, lies roughly 20 miles outside of Paris. The area is a complex of palaces and hunting grounds built in the eighteenth century by three French kings. Chateau de Versailles is the largest palace on the grounds of Versailles. Visitors can easily reach this unique symbol of France from the heart of Paris.

      Take the train. Paris has an extensive metro system that moves through much of the city. You can reach the Chateau de Versailles via the metro system. Visitors must take the RER-C train to get to Versailles. The Paris metro has two kinds of trains. Local trains serve a specific area. You can switch between local trains without additional costs. RER or Reseau Express Regionale is a separate line serving the suburbs of Paris. Visitors can switch between local Paris metro trains and the RER, but must pay a separate and more costly fare to do so. RER trains make fewer stops and can be much faster.

      Purchase a ticket. You must purchase a ticket to board trains in France. Buy individual tickets for a specific ride or buy a weekly pass. Weekly passes are accepted on both the RER and the local metro trains. Purchase a ticket from a human agent or from a ticket machine. The machine has instructions in English. Make sure that you have euro coins because most machines will not anything larger than a two-euro coin. A ticket agent can help you use the machine properly.

      Board the train. You can board the RER-C train from the Gare d'Austerlitz, St. Michel, Musee d'Orsay, Invalides, Pont d'Alma and Champs de Mars stops. Take a local metro train to any one of these stops from anywhere in Paris.

      Make sure that you have the right train. The RER-C train should say "V" on it for "Versailles." If you aren't sure if you have the right train, ask a conductor. RER trains typically offer comfortable seating and double-decker options. If you've never been to Versailles before, take a seat in the top rows to get a better view of your destination.

      Get off at the last stop. The signs will say "Versailles R.G.," or "Rive Gauche," French for "Left Bank." Hold on to your ticket. You will need it exit the train through the turnstile as you leave.

      Walk out of the train station. Look for signs to Versailles. The Chateux de Versailles is located about 10 minutes from the train. Signs in English are frequent and plentiful. You can also simply follow the crowds as you leave. Versailles is a popular day trip for many Parisian tourists.

      Take a car. You can take a car to the Châteaux by following the freeway that circles Paris. Use the toll-free A13 auto route towards Rouen and follow the signs that guide you to the town. The chateaux has a huge parking lot in front of it.

      Use a taxi. Hail a taxi from any Parisian street and get to Versailles that way. Expect to pay about four times the cost of an RER fare.
