Amtrak Travel Regulations

In October 1970, President Nixon signed the Rail Passenger Service Act. According to the Amtrak Historical Society, this law opened the door for Amtrak. Since September 11, however, the company has had to introduce controversial new rules aimed at the protection of its passengers. Limits are now in place that were not originally outlined, and Amtrak officials take certain forms of passenger behavior more seriously than ever before.
  1. Baggage

    • According to Amtrak, passengers are permitted two pieces of carry-on luggage per customer. Each bag must weigh no more than 50 lbs. You must affix visible tags to each piece with your name and address. The dimension restrictions are 28 by 22 by 14 inches per bag.

If you wish to check your bags, Amtrak will permit up to three pieces of checked baggage for free. Additional bags, at a maximum of three extra bags, are $10 per piece. All checked bags must be 36 by 36 by 36 inches or smaller.

    Bikes

    • Amtrak welcomes bicycles on most services, but you must check that the option exists on the train you wish to take. They accept folding bikes, bikes on racks or those stored in a box (you must secure it with tie-down equipment). To confirm that your train accepts bikes, call 1-800-USA-RAIL.

    Personal Hygiene

    • An Amtrak conductor may ask you to leave the train if your personal hygiene is offensive to other passengers.

    Disruptive Behavior

    • The conductor may refuse you as a passenger if you misbehave on the train. According to Amtrak, passengers under the influence of drugs or drink also fall under this category. While there is no all-inclusive list of sins to avoid while traveling on Amtrak, expect a conductor to confront you if your cell phone ring tones and conversations are too loud, if you use objectionable language or play disruptive music from a portable music device.

    Guns

    • According to the National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action, as of December 10, 2009, Amtrak must permit law-abiding citizens with gun-carrying permits to carry a gun aboard the train. However, guns must remain in a checked piece of luggage. This privilege is the result of a piece of legislation known as the Wicker Amendment.
