Amtrak Travel Restrictions

Amtrak has several travel restrictions that depend on whether you're travelling alone or as a group, and whether you're a an adult or a minor. All Amtrak passengers have to abide by these restrictions during travel. Make your trip to any of Amtrak's more than 500 destinations in 46 states hassle-free by remembering what you can and cannot do when traveling by rail.
  1. Baggage Policy

    • Your carry-on and checked baggage should weigh no more than 50 pounds each. The maximum dimensions for a carry-on baggage are 28" x 22" x 14" and for checked baggage are 36" x 36" x 36". Checked baggage needs to be checked in at least 30 minutes prior to departure. Travelers can bring up to two pieces of carry-on baggage and up to three pieces of checked-in luggage at no charge. All carry-on baggage must be visibly tagged with your name and address. Plastic storage containers, lightweight suit bags and other similar items are not accepted as checked baggage.

    Prohibited Items

    • You're not allowed to bring archery equipment and canisters, tanks or other devices containing propellants in your carry-on and checked-baggage. However, oxygen equipment for medical reasons is allowed onboard with advance notice. Incendiaries, including flammable gases, liquids, fuels, fireworks or other explosive devices; large sharp objects such as axes, ice picks and swords; and corrosive or dangerous chemicals or materials, such as liquid bleach, tear gas, stun guns, and radioactive and harmful bacteriological materials, are not allowed. Other restrictions include batteries with acid that can spill or leak except for those used in motorized wheel chairs or similar devices; club-like items, such as batons and nightsticks; fragile and/or valuable items, including but not limited to electronic equipment; and animals, except for service animals. Firearms or ammunition except for black powder, percussion caps or any ammunition used with a matchlock, flintlock, percussion-cap ignition system or similar device is not allowed in your carry-on but is allowed in your checked baggage.

    Accompanied Minors

    • Minors two to 15 years of age are considered Child passengers. Up to two children with each paying adult can travel at half-price of the lowest available Adult rail fare on most Amtrak trains. Additional children per adult pay the full Adult rate. The Child discount is not valid on weekday Acela Express trains or for travel on certain Amtrak Thruway connecting services. Discounts for children do not apply to business class, first class or sleeping accommodations, or to children traveling alone.

    Unaccompanied Minors

    • Children 15 and older may travel unaccompanied and are subject to all policies applying to adults. Minors 15 and older can purchase tickets on their own if they present a valid photo ID. Children eight to 14 can travel alone on trains that leave no earlier than 6 a.m. and arrive no later than 9 p.m., and transfers of any kind are not permitted. All children traveling alone must be brought to the station an hour before departure by an adult who is at least 18 years old and who has a valid ID, and must remain in the station until the train departs. Children seven years old and younger must be accompanied by a person who is at least 15 years old when travelling. Unaccompanied children with life-threatening food allergies cannot travel alone. The unaccompanied child must be picked up on arrival by an adult with a valid ID.
