How to Transport Your Car to Hawaii

If you need to transport your car from the mainland to Hawaii, it will be shipped by boat in an individual container, which takes about a month. Cars may be shipped from just about anywhere in the United States and delivered to ports throughout Hawaii, including Honolulu (Oahu), Hilo and Kawaihae (Hawaii), Kahului (Maui), and Nawiliwili (Kauai). Cars may also be shipped to Lanai or Molokai but will likely have an intermediate stop at one of the more major ports and the shipping will take longer. Shipping costs vary depending on the pickup spot; destination; and make, model and year of your car.

Instructions

  1. The Process

    • 1

Select a company to ship you car. You easily can locate a car shipping company by doing a Web search using the words "transport car to Hawaii." There are many options, including Pasha Hawaii, Schumacher Cargo and Ship My Vehicle.

    • 2

Provide the shipper with key information, including the make, model and year of the car; the preferred shipping date; the departure city; and the destination. When you choose a carrier, you will likely be required to put down a deposit.

    • 3

Prepare you car for shipping. Most companies recommend that you leave less than a half-tank of gas in the car, that the car be empty and that all alarm systems be disconnected. Cars to be shipped must have at least 6 inches of ground clearance, so if you have a sports car, check the clearance.

    • 4

When you deliver your car to be shipped or when it is picked up, provide the shipper with your car keys and show your title and registration (these may be copied as they will be used to get your car in and out of port) and a photo ID. If someone other than the owner will be delivering or picking up the car, the owner must provide a notarized letter of authorization. If the vehicle is leased or financed, you must provide a notarized letter from the leasing company or lender.

    • 5

Consider purchasing marine shipping insurance. While not required, it is recommended that you purchase such insurance to cover your vehicle in the event of damage. Most carriers offer this insurance through a partner at an additional charge.

    • 6

Retrieve your car from the destination port. You will be required to show a photo ID. Inspect the car for damage at this time.
