Rent a car. Once you reach Phoenix, rent a car from an airport rental facility or a nearby rental company.
Head south to Sonora on highway 85. Coming out of the airport, drive south in the direction to Puerto Penasco. Follow 85 through Gila Bend, Ajo, until you reach the border.
Cross the border at Sonoyta-Sonora. If you are stopped, the customs official may ask to see your passport and inquire if you have anything to declare. Your car may also be searched.
Stay to the right after you pass the border. Once you finish with customs, you will soon see the town of Sonoyta. Keep the car to the right and follow the signs directing you to Puerto Penasco. The signs will direct you to Mexico Route 8.
Keep driving on Route 8. Route 8 will lead you to Puerto Penasco. Stay on the road for approximately an hour and a half. This route has a couple of sharp turns so remember to stay alert as you drive.
Turn onto Caborca Road on your right. Caborca Road is located at kilometer-mark 24 and will lead you to the Mayan Palace.
Book a shuttle. If you don't want to rent a car and drive to the Mayan Palace, you can take a shuttle for about $90. Contact the resort staff and tell them you would like to book a shuttle to their hotel.
