Historic Hotels in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

If there is any hallowed ground in the United States, it is the battlefield of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The site of one of the pivotal battles of the Civil War and a key victory in turning the tide for the Union against the Confederacy--as well as one of the most famous speeches in American history--the Gettysburg area and battlefield has been a popular travel destination for tourists and history buffs for decades. One of the best ways to experience Gettysburg is by staying at one of the many city's many historic hotels.
  1. Gettystown Inn

    • In terms of pure history, there may be no better inn within Gettysburg than the Dobbin House Tavern's Gettystown Inn. First built in 1776 (four score and seven years before the battle, as the tavern's official Web site points out) as a home for the reverend Alexander Dobbin and his family, the tavern features an adjacent bed and breakfast with five rooms decorated with 19th-century antiques to look like it did in 1863. The inn overlooks the spot where, in 1863, president Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address. All rooms include a free hot country breakfast every morning. Also a part of the Dobbin House Tavern family is the Little Round Top Farm, a five-bedroom house on 12 acres about two miles from town.

    Brickhouse Inn

    • A multiple award winner in voting by Bedandbreakfast.com, the Brickhouse Inn (and the adjacent Welty House) is one of the most famous and decorated inns in Gettysburg. The Welty House was built in 1830 and was in the middle of the battle. Confederate sharpshooters occupied the house after the first day of the battle, and the house's walls are still marked by bullets that struck it during fighting. Combined, the Brickhouse Inn and Welty House offer 14 rooms just steps from the National Battlefield Park and just minutes from Lincoln Square in the middle of the city square. Room rates include hot breakfast in the mornings and lemonade and homemade treats in the afternoon.
