New Zealand's Antarctic Base: Scott Base on Ross Island

Scott Base is New Zealand's permanent research station in Antarctica, located on Ross Island in the Ross Sea sector, 3,920 km (2,435 mi) south of Christchurch. It is operated by Antarctica New Zealand (Crown Entity under MBIE).

Operations & Life

• Season: Summer (Oct–Feb) – peak science, construction, visitors. Winter (Mar–Sep) – skeleton crew, total darkness Apr–Aug.
• Power: Wind turbines (3×330 kW, shared with McMurdo) + diesel backup. 90%+ renewable in summer.
• Water: Reverse osmosis from sea ice melt.
• Waste: Zero discharge—everything shipped out (except grey water treated).
• Communications: Satellite (Intelsat, Iridium), shared McMurdo fiber.

2023 Redevelopment

NZ$344M project: new 10-building campus (labs, accommodation, workshops, energy center), seismic resilience, increased capacity, lower carbon footprint. Completed 2023–24 season.
