Silver Creek Camping in California

Situated on the bank of the scenic Truckee River in California's Tahoe National Forest, the Silver Creek Campground (fs.usda.gov) is a quiet and shady campground shadowed by lodgepole pine and fir trees. The campground is on Highway 89, only a short drive from Lake Tahoe, and is a prime destination for hiking, fishing and relaxing in the great outdoors.
  1. Campground

    • The Silver Creek Campground has more than 25 campsites, seven of which are walk-in sites for tents only. The rest of the campsites are open to tents as well as RVs, although RVs longer than 24 feet might have a hard time navigating the campground's narrow roads and limited turnaround space. Waterfront sites are not available, but the entire campground is within walking distance of the Truckee River. The campground is densely wooded, and tall adult trees provide shade and privacy at most sites.

    Facilities

    • The accommodations are fairly rustic at the Silver Creek Campground, and amenities are limited. Showers, electricity and RV hookups are not available, but the campground has restrooms and potable drinking water. Every campsite has a picnic table, campfire ring and grill. You can purchase firewood from the campground host, who is available for camper assistance. Gas, groceries, restaurants, convenience stores, sporting goods, telephones and ATMs are available within 10 miles of the campground in Truckee and Tahoe City.

    Recreation

    • The Truckee River is an excellent trout stream, and many anglers have success fly-fishing the river. A current California fishing license is required. The river is open to swimming and tubing as well, and you can explore the area on several hiking trails. The Deer Creek Trail is one of the closest options, beginning just outside the campground and winding through 3.6 miles of easy to moderate terrain until it reaches a trailhead on Forest Road 06.

    Considerations

    • You must reserve a campsite at least two days in advance to stay at the Silver Creek Campground. Reservations are available by phone, or online through ReserveAmerica (reserveamerica.com) and Recreation.gov. Campsites can accommodate one vehicle, one legally towed vehicle -- such as an RV or camper -- and up to six people. Pets are allowed, but must be leashed and cleaned up after. Bears have been known to frequent the area, so campers are required to store food in approved containers.
