California Lake Campgrounds

California is 158,706 square miles large and the third-largest U.S. state. Outdoors enthusiasts have many campgrounds to visit throughout the state. Options include camping in state parks, national parks, forests and privately owned campgrounds. Popular camping locations include those near mountains or lakes. Campers opting to camp near a lake have the benefit of the many water activities that are available. There are campgrounds that can accommodate RVs, campers, pop out trailers, tents and sleeping bags. Some campgrounds offer cabins for rent as well. California campgrounds often offer full-service facilities, while some campers choose primitive campgrounds with limited or no facilities.
  1. Convict Lake Campground

    • Convict Creek runs right through the Convict Lake Campground. This campground has 88 campsites, of which 25 require reservations while the others are on a first come-first served basis. None of the campsites have water, electricity or sewer hookups. Convict Lake Resort is located across from the campground and has a restaurant, store and pack station. Activities include swimming, boating, fishing, sightseeing, bird watching, biking, hunting, kayaking, and skiing in winter. Amenities for campers include toilets, hot showers, grills, picnic tables, ice machines and a pay telephone. Within 10 miles of the campground you will find a post office, hospital, laundry facility, hiking trails and a visitor's center.

    Twin Lakes Campground

    • Twin Lakes Campground is located near Mammoth Lakes in California. Campers enjoy backpacking, biking, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, boating and kayaking. The campsites are located in a pine forest area that lies at an elevation of 8,600 feet. Each campsite comes with bear boxes for safe food storage, picnic tables, fire rings, showers and flush toilets. Nearby facilities include a hospital, convenience store and laundry facilities. Reservations for this campground must be made at least four days ahead of arrival.

    Rock Creek Lake Campground

    • Rock Creek Lake Campground has more than 300 camping sites, most of which are located in wooded areas with the creek flowing nearby. Campers can use the available picnic tables and metal fire ring along with a bear box for safe food storage. The campsites are quite and secluded and if firewood is needed, campers can purchase it on-site. Most of the campsites don't require a reservation.
