How to Make Tent Weights

Anyone who has ever had heavy winds blow away their tent knows the importance of tent weights. Even a well-staked tent can be susceptible to this problem. Soil around tent stakes can become loose as the ground moistens and dries, allowing the stakes to be pulled out by a strong gust. The recommended weight for each tent weight is 40 lbs.. You can make your own tent weights using a few commonly found materials.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic PVC tube that measures 4 inches in diameter and at least 120 inches long

  • Eight plastic end caps for the tube
  • Four eyebolts, 4 inches long with a nut

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the PVC tubes into four, 30-inch long pieces with a saw.

    • 2

Use the pipe glue to glue one end cap on each of the four tubes.

    • 3

Drill a hole in each of the four remaining end caps just large enough to accept the eyebolt. Insert an eyebolt in each hole. Thread a nut just onto the end of each eyebolt, inside the end cap. This will help anchor the eyebolt into the concrete.

    • 4

Combine the concrete mixture and water according to the manufacturer's instructions. Mix together in a clean bucket with a shovel.

    • 5

Pour the concrete into the first tube until it is completely full. Install the end cap on the open end, anchoring the eyebolt and nut into the concrete. Pipe glue will not be necessary, as the concrete will hold this cap on.

    • 6

Repeat the concrete filling process for the remaining three tubes.

    • 7

Allow the concrete to dry for 24 hours before attempting to use.
