How to Set Up a Hillary Tent

Sir Edmund Hillary is famous as the first man who climbed Mount Everest. But not many people know that shortly after Hillary came down off the mountaintop he became an adviser for Sears and offered the department store advice about what type of camping equipment to sell its customers for over four decades.
Hillary personally tested the tents, which are made by three companies and found for sale only at Sears, that bear his name.

Things You'll Need

  • Hillary tent
  • Tarp
  • Hammer

Instructions

    • 1

Find a camping site and select an area that is flat and dry as the spot to pitch your tent.

    • 2

Prepare the site by removing any rocks, sticks or branches. Your camping spot should also be shielded somewhat from the elements and large enough for both the Hillary tent and a campfire.

    • 3

Lay out your tarp flat on the ground.

    • 4

Lay your tent out on top of the tarp. Make sure the entrance/exit flap is facing in the right direction. (You don't want to walk out of the tent in the middle of the night into a stream).

    • 5

Insert stakes in the corner loops. Use your hammer to bang the stakes firmly into the ground.

    • 6

Insert the tent poles. You should have two long poles and one short pole. The two longest poles support the roof and intersect in the middle of the tent while the short pole keeps the rainfly tightly secured.

    • 7

Unfold the rainfly and insert the short pole into the cloth sleeve. Pull the rainfly over the top of the tent. Attach the hooks to the corners of the rainfly and the tent.
