How to Set Up a Tarp Tent

Setting up a tent can be a trying ordeal, especially when you only plan to camp for a single night. One easy option for a temporary and adequate shelter in such circumstances is a tarp tent, which you can create with materials you likely own already and takes only minutes to set up.

Things You'll Need

  • Tarp (8-by-10 feet or larger)
  • 6 tent stakes
  • Trekking pole

Instructions

    • 1

Find a reasonably flat, dry area to set up the tarp tent. Green grass makes an excellent floor if you can find it, since in addition to the comfort of lying on grass, it will absorb considerable water should it rain.

    • 2

Lay your tarp out flat. Pull the corners to remove any creases or folds.

    • 3

Face one of the long sides of the tarp, locate the center and find the grommet situated between the center and the right corner. Drive one stake, securing that grommet to the ground. Repeat this process on the left side. This completes the rear side of the tent.

    • 4

Move to the other long side of the tarp. Take the front left corner and move it halfway toward the center so it aligns with the stake in the rear left of the tarp and secure the grommet to the ground with a tent stake. Shift to the right side and move the front right corner to line up with the right rear stake and secure it in a like fashion.

    • 5

Find the front central grommet and insert the tip of your inverted trekking pole into the grommet, then set the handle of the pole onto the ground directly beneath the grommet to create a doorway.

    • 6

Go to the left side of the tent, find the center grommet and pull it outward until the tarp is taut, then use a tent stake to secure it to the ground. Repeat this step on the right side of the tent.

    • 7

Tuck the right rear corner of the tarp into the tent; do the same with the left rear corner.
