Currently, 15 state parks in Ohio offer free Wi-Fi, and as broadband becomes more widely available, the state will add more parks to its Wi-Fi list. Boat, fish and swim in the 1,075-acre Cowan Lake State Park near Wilmington. For your convenience, 237 electric and 17 nonelectric sites are available. Southeastern Ohio’s Jackson Lake State Park in Jackson County is small at 106 acres and 34 electric camping sites, but offers rugged hills and valleys for hiking in one of the state’s most scenic areas. Explore dolomite caves, a 75-foot gorge and wetlands near the Rocky Fort State Park near Hillsboro, Ohio, about 60 miles west of Cincinnati. Other state parks offering free Wi-Fi are Dillon, East Fork, East Harbor, Forked Run, Geneva, Grank Lake St. Marys, Hueston Woods, Lake Alma, Lake Loramie, Mosquito Lake, Punderson and Pymatuning. All state park campgrounds are open year-round but may offer limited facilities in winter.
At the present time, three county and city parks offer free Wi-Fi at their camping sites. Winton Woods Campground, just 20 minutes north of Cincinnati, lies in the 2,500- acre Winton Woods. Rates begin at $27 for basic sites and go to $125 for deluxe cabins. The campground features a large store, activity shelter and playground. Steamboat Bend State park is a 1,030-acre Woodland Mound on the east side of Cincinnati, five minutes from the Riverbend Music Center. On the shores of the Ohio River, camping is available at 55 sites for self-contained trailers or RVs on a weekly or monthly basis, April through October. Timberwoods Camping Resort has more than 100 wooded sites in northwestern Ohio’s Van Wert County. Amenities include modern showers, an in-ground pool, mini golf, a recreation hall and playground.
KOA campgrounds, open from April to November, offer a comfortable, family-friendly camping experience with deluxe cabins, patio camping sites, family activities, bike rentals, mini golf, swimming pools and free Wi-Fi. All KOA sites have bathrooms and showers, and some have camping kitchens where tent campers can conveniently prepare hot meals. The Dayton KOA in Brookville, Ohio, has a 90 percent rating out of nearly 1,000 reviews on its site. Nearby attractions include the U.S. Air Force Museum. Visit the gem mine in the Hocking Hills Forest while staying at the Hocking Hills KOA in southeastern Ohio. The East Sparta KOA, also known as the Bear Creek Resort Ranch KOA, has a wealth of trails for horseback and ATV riding. Near a large Amish community, the area is also home to the National Pro Football Hall of Fame and the McKinley Presidential Library and Museum. Other Ohio KOAs with free Wi-Fi include Sandusky, Perrysburg, Buckeye Lake, Streetsboro, Butler and Shelbyparks.
For those who prefer more mobility, Ohio has a number of RV parks. Some are strictly for RV use, while others allow tent camping. Countryside RV Park in Mogadore, Ohio, on State Route 43, is open from May to October. The park has 95 RV sites for a nightly fee. Amenities include dumping stations, a grocery store and LP gas for sale. Ohio’s top rated RV resort, Evergreen ParkRV Resort, is in Dundee, Ohio. The park is open all year and includes 87 spaces for a nightly fee. Scenic Hills RV Park near Hillsburg, Ohio, has 112 sites for a nightly fee and features an on-site RV wash.
