Car Camping: List of Fresh Food

Car camping is a fun way to see the outdoors, and since the packed goods aren't carried on your back, they don't have to be kept to a minimum. Car camping is especially practical for parents who want to travel and camp, but who have young children who couldn't handle a strenuous backpacking trip. Food is an additional car camping perk. Since weight isn't an issue, you can bring a whole cooler full of fresh foods, and leave the dehydrated space food behind. Keep food below 40 degrees F (0 degrees F for frozen foods) to avoid spoilage. Block ice lasts longer than cubed ice and is ideal for frozen foods.
  1. Fruit

    • Fresh fruits such as apples, oranges, peaches and grapes are ideal for car camping trips. These fruits keep well in a cooler and will not deteriorate in hot weather. Wrap fruits in plastic wrap or put in a plastic bag to protect them from melting ice. Apples, oranges and peaches will stay good at room temperature for three to four days.

    Vegetables

    • Ideal vegetables for car camping include carrots, celery, cucumbers, zucchini and green beans. Choose vegetables that have just ripened to avoid spoiling. Vegetables keep best if they are kept in a cooler.

    Cheese

    • Hard cheeses can be taken on car camping trips without a cooler or source of refrigeration. Soft cheeses, however, require refrigeration. Cheese is a good source of protein for the road, and is also quite filling.
