Camps in the Baxter State Park Area in Maine

Baxter State Park, located in Millinocket, Maine, is named after former Maine Governor Percival P. Baxter, who donated the land to the state in 1931. At 204,733 acres, the park is home to many different species of native animals and plants. Within the park and the areas surrounding it, there are a wide selection of campgrounds, some of which offer RV hookups as well as lean-to and tent sites.

    • Baxter State Park is home to 10 different campgrounds, including Abol Campground, Katahdin Stream Campground, Daicey Pond Campground and Kidney Pond Campground. Amenities in the park are limited. There is no electricity or showers, but campers do have access to outhouses. Canoe rentals are available at some campgrounds. Tent and lean-to site rental fees are $30 per night during the summer months. If you're interested in renting a cabin, there are some available.     Big Moose Inns, Cabins & Campground

    • The Big Moose Inn, Cabins and Campground is situated on Millinocket Lake in Millinocket, Maine, just minutes away from Baxter State Park. The campground features 35 tent sites and six lean-to sites. The West Branch of the Penobscot River is close by as well, allowing campers easy access to the river and the rapids located on the West Branch. If you find yourself in need of supplies while staying at the campground, Big Moose has a trading post, which sells a variety of food items along with camping and fishing gear. In addition, there are two restaurants nearby: Fredericka's Restaurant and the Loose Moose Bar & Grille. Big Moose charges $10 per person per night for tent sites, while lean-tos are slightly more expensive at $12 per person per night.

    Hidden Springs Campground

    • The Hidden Springs Campground is in close proximity to Baxter State Park, the North Maine Woods, the Allegash Waterway and the Moosehead Lake Region. The campground's amenities include a swimming pool, picnic tables, a dumping station for garbage, fireplaces, free hot showers and free coffee. Dogs are welcome at the campground, but they must be kept on a leash and supervised at all times. Pet sitting is available.
