Just over the state line near Clearville, Pennsylvania, is Hidden Springs Campground, which accommodates both RVs and tents from early May until late October, weather permitting. Five miles northwest of Flintstone, the campground has 100 sites, including 27 with full hookups. If you can resist the temptation to explore nearby state parks and forests, Hidden Springs has plenty to keep active campers occupied. Campers have access to a seasonal outdoor swimming pool, a miniature golf course, sports courts, a ball field, game room, fishing pond, hiking trails and a playground. Among the campground’s other amenities are a camp store, bathhouse with restrooms and showers, picnic area, coin-operated laundry facilities and a dump station.
Eight miles west-northwest of Flintstone, Rocky Gap State Park covers more than 3,000 acres of rugged mountains and woodlands. Its centerpiece is 243-acre Lake Habeeb, fed by Rocky Gap Run that carves its way through a mile-long gorge before emptying into the lake. Open from early May to mid-December, the park’s sprawling campground has 278 individual campsites, including 30 with electric hookups, a family group campsite and two youth group camping areas. The campground is divided into several camping loops, each of which has its own bathhouse with restrooms and hot showers. Other facilities accessible to campers include a boat ramp, camp store, swimming beach, nature center, miles of hiking trails, and boat and canoe rentals. Also available are a number of small rental cabins and the Easter Hill Chalet, a fully equipped rental property that can accommodate up to eight people.
If primitive camping appeals to you, Green Ridge State Forest might be the perfect choice for your local camping expedition. The sprawling forest -- the largest contiguous block of public land in Maryland -- covers 47,560 acres. The forest has 100 primitive individual campsites and seven primitive group sites, each of which can accommodate groups of 20 or more. Campers must register for campsites at the state forest headquarters. Each individual campsite has a picnic table and fire ring, and campers have access to vault toilets. Recreational activities in the state forest include boating, canoeing, fishing, hiking, hunting, mountain biking and sport shooting.
Happy Hills Campground, 28 miles east-southeast of Flintstone, lies 5 miles west of historic Hancock, Maryland, and close to the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park. Open year-round, the 350-acre campground has 230 campsites, some with full hookups, as well as a handful of cabins and campers that are available for rent. Nearby is the 48,000-square-foot Hancock Antique Mall and Indoor Flea Market. Campers at Happy Hills can enjoy seasonal outdoor swimming and wading pools, a basketball court, bingo hall, playground, miniature golf course and horseshoe pits.
