Is the desert considered as wilderness?

The answer is Yes. Wilderness can simply mean a wild undeveloped part of nature. Deserts generally consist of dry land with sparse vegetations so we can certainly call it wilderness. Some areas of desert even consist mostly of bare or sandy ground such as sand dunes making it look even "wilder".
