French Youth Hostels

Backpacking through Europe and staying at inexpensive hostels is a twenty-something, post-collegiate tradition that goes back for generations. That tradition is as strong as ever, as evidenced by the number of new hostels popping up every year. France is no exception, and some of the better hostels more closely resemble modern boutique hotels than army barracks.
  1. Lucky Youth Hostels

    • The Lucky Youth Hostel in Paris is an apartment building geared toward backpackers between 18 and 28 years old. Each bedroom contains bunk beds and sleeps from three to six people. Kitchen and bathroom facilities are shared.
A representative of the hostel will meet patrons at the station closest to the apartment building and guide them there. There is no curfew, so guests are asked to be quiet when entering and leaving their quarters. Amenities include free linens, free breakfast, Internet service and laundry facilities.

    Oops! Hostel

    • The home page of the Oops! Hostel website also refers to the building as a budget hotel, but Oops! is a youth-oriented hostel with a modern design aesthetic. The Oops! Hostel is close to Rue Moufftard, Chinatown and the Latin Quarter, so it is in the center of some of the busiest areas of Paris. It is also a hub of college student activity, with a number of bars and cafes within easy walking distance.

Private rooms are offered along with the more traditional (and cheaper) multi-guest dorm rooms. The hostel offers free breakfast, free Internet, a free city tour and air conditioning. There is no curfew, although rooms are closed for cleaning from 11 to 4 p.m. Bookings for more than seven people are not accepted.

    Friends Hostel

    • The Friends Hostel provides 24-hour student and backpacker-oriented lodging, with clean, no-frills rooms. The Montmartre and Pigalle neighborhoods are close by, as well as a bicycle renting station for getting around Paris on the cheap. Twin rooms are available, as well as rooms for three to six guests, and even as many as 14. Rooms are locked out every day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for cleaning. A small on-site library is available to guests, as well as free Internet and fax. Laundromats are close to the hostel.
