European Youth Hostels

The idea of youth hostels began in Germany in the early 1900s. A teacher by the name of Richard Schirrmann arranged various trips for groups of students around the country. During one of these trips, the group was forced to reside in a empty school building during a bout of bad weather. The idea emerged of using empty school buildings during the holidays in which traveling students could reside. Hostels today provide similar accommodation for individuals of all ages. Inexpensive lodging in a dormitory or private lodging with shared bathrooms are common layouts. There are youth hostels all around Europe.
