YHA Hostels in England

The Youth Hostel Association (YHA) provides dormitory-style accommodation to travelers in more than 200 locations in the United Kingdom and across the world. Despite its name, a youth hostel is not solely for young travelers. Contemporary usage of the term substitutes "hostel" and "youth hostel" interchangeably.
  1. Northeastern and Northwestern England

    • Scafell Pike, England's tallest mountain

Northeastern England has 16 YHA hostels. The majority of accommodations are in rural, rustic regions of the area, although one hostel is on the outskirts of Newcastle upon Tyne, a city with a metropolitan area population of more than 800,000 people, and another is at the University of Durham in Durham City, south of Newcastle.

Northwestern England, also known as the Lake District, boasts 26 youth hostels. The Lake District is a popular vacation spot. One especially scenic hostel is in Eskdale, home of Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England.

    North Yorkshire and Yorkshire Dales

    • A view from the Yorkshire Dales

Eight YHA hostels grace the area of North Yorkshire, which is in northeastern England. Three are in coastal villages Whitby, Boggle Hole and Scarborough, and one hostel is in the more urban York.

Although part of the Yorkshire Dales falls within the boundaries of North Yorkshire, the YHA lists this region in the west separately. Within the Yorkshire Dales are 11 hostels; of those, six are within the lush Yorkshire Dales National Park.

    London

    • London, capital of England

The small but dense region that constitutes the England's capital, London, contains numerous accommodations for travelers. Seven YHA hostels operate out of the London metropolitan area, including one in central London and one alongside the bank of the Thames River.

    Eastern and Southeastern England

    • Eastbourne, one of the coastal towns with YHA accommodations

Eastern England boasts 10 coastal hostels. Three are in coastal towns, and three more, Woody's Top, Blaxhall and Stour Valley Bunkhouse, are a stone's throw from the ocean. For travelers who prefer slightly bigger cities, a hostel is in Cambridge.

Southeastern England, a highly developed region due to its proximity to London, contains 17 YHA locations, both on the outskirts of the London metropolitan area and on England's southern coast.

    Heart of and Southwestern England

    • Stonehenge, located in southwestern England

The heart of England, situated in the southern part of the country and west of London, encompasses 14 YHA hostels, including one in Oxford and another in Shakespeare's birthplace, Stratford upon Avon.

Southwestern England, another highly developed part of the country that contains many cities, is more populated with hostels than any other single region. Travelers hoping to stay in this area have 36 YHA hostel choices. This region is the home of such internationally recognized cities as Bath, Bristol and Penzance, all of which contain hostels.
