Hotels in Kobuleti, Georgia

In the late 19th century, when Georgia (which nestles between Turkey, Russia and Azerbaijan) was part of the Russian Empire and not the independent sovereign state it is today, holidaying at the resort of Kobuleti was a sign of status. Dignitaries and high-ranking officials flocked there while eminent scientists wrote about the healing powers of the sub tropical climate and fresh Black Sea air. Kobuleti is renowned for its 12km beach, which is flanked by a lush pine forest and dotted with hotels and guest houses ranging from basic to five star luxury. The resort bustles in the summer months, especially August when there is a party atmosphere in the many bars and clubs.
  1. Getting Started

    • You won't need a visa to holiday in Kobuleti if you have a U.S. passport. The nearest airport is Batumi and the good news is, U.S. dollars are a preferred currency. Most shops, restaurants and bars only accept cash - only the larger hotels and banks will take credit cards. Kobuleti is a 50 minute drive from the airport. The road is bendy, so be careful if you are hiring a car and don't forget to pack the travel sickness pills.

    On A Budget

    • Rooms in Kobuleti start at around $20 (Feb. 2011) per person at somewhere like Hotel Barbare . It's situated in the town, which often has heavy traffic, so it can be noisy. To get sea views on a budget, try the Savane Hotel. Prices start at $50 (Feb. 2011) for a standard double. Rooms have air con, a fridge and satellite TV. Please note that cheaper hotels in Kobuleti will probably feel 'dated' compared to those you might be used to at home or in more exclusive resorts, but what you do get if you stay on the beach, are some memorable sunsets for your money.

    To Hell With The Budget

    • Pack your tennis racket for a stay at Green House, Kobuleti. The hotel has a gym, tennis courts and a swimming pool. It's also on the beach. Prices range from $60 for a standard double to $100 for a deluxe family room (Feb. 2011). A step up from that is Hotel Kobuleti Beach Club, which has a swimming pool and is right on the beach. Prices start at $100 for a double and rise to $170 for a suite (Feb. 2011). If it's real luxury you're after, look no further than the five star Georgia Palace Hotel where prices start from $127 for a basic room to $1,500 (Feb. 2011) for the best suite in the building. Guests have access to a private beach, a luxury spa, a gym, sauna and outdoor pool. There are three restaurants and a bar lounge.

Journey south of Batumi to the Fortress At Gonio. For peace and quiet, head to The Kolubeti Nature Reserve or the breathtaking Kintrishi Nature Reserve.

    Don'ts...

    • Don't leave valuables in your hotel room. Keep an eye on your room key to prevent it being stolen. Don't leave the door unlocked when you are in your hotel room, and whatever you do, don't hitchhike.
