As of 2010, there are 19 junior colleges in the state of Iowa, each of which is governed by elected officials who serve on boards of directors for three-year terms. All residents of Iowa who meet specific requirements set forth by each college are eligible to attend the community college of their choice. Iowa's community colleges offer courses in three main instructional areas: adult education, career programs, and vocational or technical training.
Northeast Iowa Community College was founded in 1966; it has two campuses, in Calmar and Peosta. Approximately 44 percent of its students are enrolled in vocational and technical programs. Studies have shown that nearly 80 percent of Northeast Iowa Community College vocational program graduates find employment within six months of graduation.

North Iowa Area Community College is located in Mason City, Iowa; it was founded as Mason City Junior College in 1918. In 1965, the school changed its name to North Iowa Area Community College. Enrollment at NIACC is approximately 3,273, of which 42 percent are enrolled in vocational programs. Fifty percent of its student body are full-time students.

Iowa Central Community College is located in Fort Dodge, Iowa; it was organized in 1966, when three existing junior colleges--Fort Dodge, Webster City and Eagle Grove--were merged into one college. ICCC offers over 45 career and academic programs; as of 2010, it has an enrollment of 5,731.

The 250-acre Iowa Western Community College was founded in 1965; as of 2010, it has an enrollment of 5,100. The school's colors are royal blue and white. The mascot is the Reiver, a river pirate, which was accepted by student body vote in 1973.

The 675-acre Kirkwood Community College was founded in 1966; it offers more than 120 career, certificate and transfer programs. Kirkwood offers five online degrees, the only floral career program in the state. The college has its own vineyard and winery.
