It has an extremely high salt content, with 44 parts per thousand; flats formed by sea salts can be readily broken using your hand. Tourists to the area enjoy both fishing and boating on the sea. It is also safe to swim here, despite the rumors to the contrary.

    Eco-System

    • The Salton Sea is also a popular retreat for bird-watching enthusiasts, as it is home to hundreds of bird species. In addition, its habitats support an array of endangered species, including nearly 40 percent of the remaining United States population of the Yuma clapper rail, 90 percent of the American white pelican and 90 percent of the eared grebe.
