Salton Sea Beach is a census-designated place in California's Imperial County with a population of approximately 392 citizens. Part of the El Centro, California Metropolitan Statistical Area, Salton Sea Beach itself does not have any places to stay, though there is a hotel near the town. In addition to the Sea and Sun Motel, guests are welcome to camp out at the nearby Salton Sea State Recreation Area.
The Salton Sea covers a total area of 376 square miles, making it bigger than both Mono Lake and Lake Tahoe. The Salton Sea is California's largest inland lake. It has an extremely high salt content, with 44 parts per thousand; flats formed by sea salts can be readily broken using your hand. Tourists to the area enjoy both fishing and boating on the sea. It is also safe to swim here, despite the rumors to the contrary.
The Salton Sea is also a popular retreat for bird-watching enthusiasts, as it is home to hundreds of bird species. In addition, its habitats support an array of endangered species, including nearly 40 percent of the remaining United States population of the Yuma clapper rail, 90 percent of the American white pelican and 90 percent of the eared grebe.
The Sea and Sun Motel is located within walking distance of the shores of the Salton Sea in Thermal, which is just 27 minutes away from Salton Sea Beach by car.
