Americans living or working in the Ukraine are allowed to drive their American cars there, once they have them shipped from the United States. Lots of shipping companies advertise their services on the Internet--to bring your car over with the fewest possible problems, you need to know how to find one that's reliable, and won't overcharge you. You'll also need to know how to meet the Ukrainian government's legal requirements.
Set your budget. The Canuckabroad.com website points out you not only have to pay for shipping across the Atlantic, but the cost of loading and unloading the vehicle and--if you can't pick it up yourself--land transport after the car is unloaded at the port.
Research shippers before you hire. If you know anyone who's had a car shipped to Europe, ask them for a recommendation--if not, there are multiple websites including internationalcarshipping.net, shipmyvehicle.com and shipoverseas.com that offer the service. If any firms look promising, ask them for references, make sure their business license is legitimate, and check for complaints against them with the Better Business Bureau.
Ask three to five companies for price quotes and compare them. Canuckabroad.com says to make sure you know exactly what you're buying: There may be differences in the time it will take to deliver your car, the shipping container the companies use and what happens if your car is damaged en route.
Prepare your passport and your vehicle registration when you bring your car into the Ukraine. Tryukraine.com says that when you cross the border, you write the car's license plate number on your immigration card, and your passport receives a "temporary import" stamp. This tells the authorities you're not bringing the car into the Ukraine to sell and don't have to pay an import duty.
Register your car within 10 days of going through customs. Go2Kiev.com says that's required if you're going to use it longer than two months. Registration is good for a year, but there's usually no difficulty renewing it for longer. After you register, you'll receive a temporary Ukrainian license plate.
