RIU hotels and resorts was founded in 1953 by Juan Riu. The first hotel was built in San Francisco and has expanded to 102 properties throughout the world. The chain is operated by Juan Riu's grandchildren, Carmen Riu Guell and Luis Riu Guell. In 1993, the family-operated chain expanded their properties into international territories by opening a resort in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. The Club RIU Tequila is an all-inclusive resort in Playa Del Carmen. The resort holds 664 guest rooms that include telephone, air conditioning, mini-bars, liquor dispensers and electronic in-room safes. RIU Lupita is in Playa Del Carmen on the Yucatan peninsula. This hotel has 300 guest rooms and family rooms include bunk beds for children.
