The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in North America. Glacial melting caused the waters to rise. The flooding of the Susquehanna, which was known as Chesepiooc, meaning "Great Shellfish Bay," by the local Algonquin Indians, created the Chesapeake Bay Region.
