Galveston, Texas, also known as Galveston Island, is located less than an hour south of Houston. The online Galveston Visitors' Guide states that Galveston is a popular vacation destination due to its semi-tropical climate, beach activities, four-star hotels, museums and historical areas, restaurants and shopping. The only drawback to this location is damage sustained during 2008's Hurricane Ike. The city and beach areas have been almost entirely restored, but visitors are still advised to use extreme caution when entering Galveston's coastal waters.
