Safety Measures in Hotels

Hotels have gone to great lengths to improve and increase safety measures for employees and guests. The large number of people nearby has presented many threats to safety and security and guests have come to rely on hotels to protect them. It is the responsibility of hotel owners, management, staff and guests to act responsibly to ensure safety in hotels. Measures are put in place to eliminate potential hazards such as fire and crime.

  1. Equipment

    • Safety equipment comes in many forms and acts to protect and prevent hazards such as fires, power outages, hurricanes and other emergency situations. Fire exit signs and doors lead employees and staff in the right direction in an emergency; an emergency power supply will automatically power on if the power is lost. Other equipment includes fire detectors and alarms in each room and throughout the hotel premises, fire hydrants, passage ramps and sprinkler systems and security cameras. Fire curtains and fire extinguishers are usually present in each hotel room for the protection of the guest.

    Employees

    • Hotels are more commonly training their employees for what to do in the event of an emergency. Hotels undergo health and safety training such as first aid training and use of first aid kits. More hotels are performing background checks on their employees and employing staff to produce organization plans that will enable them to act quickly in an emergency. Many hotels also incur extra liability through swimming pools and hot tubs, and usually employ qualified, trained individuals to monitor swimming pool safety. Some hotels also require guests to provide ID upon check-in.

    Guests

    • Guests are expected to familiarize themselves with hotel safety measures. Hotels and resorts typically contain an exit plan and guidelines of what to do in an emergency in the hotel room. Electronic locks and in-room safes keep guests protected while they are in their hotel rooms. Exercise and recreational facilities such as swimming pools usually carry added instructions directed at guests for their safety information awareness. Safety signage usually advises guests when they are proceeding at their own caution.
