New Matamoras is in the southeast corner of Ohio, just across West Virginia state line. When the town was first established it was known as Matamoras. In 1861, the town's name was changed so that it would not be confused with another town in Ohio -- Metamora.
The town is named after the Battle of Matamoras, which was fought during the Mexican-American War. Washington County was given its name in 1788 as a tribute to George Washington. The county once encompassed nearly 50 percent of Ohio -- it now consists of approximately 635 square miles.
