The log cabin has become a symbol of American colonial life. Swedish colonists built log houses when they came to America in 1638. Other settlers followed suit. When the pioneers traveled westward after the Revolution, they found thick forests in what is now West Virginia, and the log cabin became the typical type of housing.
Rental cabins can accommodate from two to eight people. Most have full kitchens, bathrooms and fireplaces, and are furnished. Many cabin rental facilities have outdoor amenities such as stocked fishing ponds, swimming pools and outdoor grills.
The West Virginia mountains are full of beauty and excitement for the avid outdoorsman. There are log cabins within easy access of New River Gorge, the Gauley River, caverns, lakes and state parks. Outdoor activities include white water rafting, canoeing, fishing, hunting, mountain biking, hiking, spelunking, rock climbing and horseback riding.
The most well-known log cabin in the United States is the one in which Abraham Lincoln was born.
