Hallstatt, Austria Hotels

The small village of Hallstatt lies at the center of the UNESCO World Heritage area of Hallstatt-Dachstein-Salzkammergut. With a human history more than 7,000 years old, it is the location of the world's oldest salt mine. Hallstatt was originally built to be serviced by boats; therefore, automobile traffic is restricted, giving the village a quiet, peaceful air. Hotels in the tiny town all offer stunning views of Lake Hallstatt and the surrounding mountains, no matter what the price range.

    Braugasthof

    • Run by the Lobisser family, this hotel offers eight rooms in a former brewery right in the middle of Hallstatt. Under the same roof guests find the restaurant and bar, along with a beautiful lakeside terrace affording scenic views of Lake Hallstatt.

The Gothic building dates from at least 1472 and the Lobisser family has lived in it for 150 of those years. However old the foundation is, the rooms are updated with modern amenities such as satellite televisions and en suite bathrooms with showers. Furnishings are Austrian style with balconies opening onto the lake on most rooms. A breakfast buffet is included with the room price. There is no elevator to this three-story building, and it is only a three-minute walk to the town square and main lake ferry.

The restaurant serves traditional Austrian and local fare, including lake whitefish and Grüner Veltliner wine. It has recently begun opening year round after closing during winter for most of its entire history. Visitors can tour the workshop of Arnold Lobisser, a family member and well-respected musical instrument maker by appointment.
